Since 1948

The firm of M.D. Dotson and Sons Funeral Home was founded in 1948 by Marquis Dotson, Sr. with assistance and encouragement of his father Walter E. Dotson.

Marquis Dotson Sr. was born in the rural area of McMinn County, Tennessee. While his siblings left home to pursue other interest, Marquis saw the need to remain in McMinn County to take care of his families farming output which was their means of support. As more families came into the area, there became an urgent need to care for minority families and their deceased loved ones. Other funeral homes around the area did not accept Afro-American business, thus giving Marquis Sr. a reason to establish an honorable funeral firm, M.D. Dotson and Sons Funeral Home.

Since the firms inception in 1948, M.D. Dotson and Sons Funeral Home has been and is still the only minority funeral home between Knoxville and Chattanooga, Tennessee, offering services to minority families in a wide rural population band; Meigs, Monroe, Loudon, Harriman, Rhea, Bradley and McMinn County.

In 1976 Marquis Dotson Jr. completed John A. Gupton College of Mortuary Science and soon became a licensed embalmer and funeral director. Soon thereafter his wife, Alma Dotson, also became a licensed funeral director. For the past thirty years the firm has stood under the ownership and control of Marquis and Alma Dotson Jr.

Today the legacy continues to be passed down to the third generation of Dotsons. Marquis Dotson III, comes on as a third generation licensed embalmer and funeral director. Marquis III is also a 2005 graduate of John A. Gupton College of Mortuary Science. Yashan Long also comes along as an apprentice funeral director.

The name Dotson is synonymous with quality, perfection, the finest craftsman in the art of restoration, and timeless care of remains of loved ones. This tradition continues to be a family owned establishment with outstanding pride and an unbeatable record of what real funeral service is about.
